Getting to Alicante

Getting to Alicante or moving from one place to another while in town is not a problem as the city has a good transport system. There are a number of traveling options one can choose from including taking a bus which is not very expensive. Also, if one wants to head to nearby cities and resorts at the Spain’s coastal resorts, they can easily use bus transport. Other means of getting in and out of the town include rail transport from the ‘RENFE Estacion de Madrid’ station, you can also use taxi transport and if you wish to get to Algeria, one can use ferries.

Alicante Airport (ALC) which is located a few kilometers from the city center is one of the major modes of transport to this area and the airport is usually very busy as tourists come in all year round with summer being the pick season. The city has a well developed pedestrian centre like in Explanada de Espana promenade, which makes it easy for people to travel around the city on foot. Here is a breakdown of the city’s main forms of public transport and travel.

Alicante Airport (ALC) – Once at the airport, there are a number of cars for hire you can use to get you anywhere you want to go. Companies that provide this service are based there and they can get you city center city or the area around hustle free. Some of them include Avis, Europcar, Atesa, Sol-Mar and Hertz. Major roads around the city include the n-330, N-340, A-31, A-70 and A-70. Major thoroughfares include Ramba de Mendez Nunez and Calle Gran Via. Travel by Bus and Coach – there are buses that regularly travel from the main bus station in Alicante located along Calle Portugal. There are over ten buses traveling in and out of the bus station and among them there are those for long distances like Valencia City which is two and half hours away. They also travel to Madrid in 5 hours and other nearby coastal cities.

Travel by Tram – Alicante trams are used to link the Plaza del Mar to the Playa del Postiguet. These services are available throughout the day. The city also has modern trams that run on, separate lines, all the way to the main train station.

Travel by Train – Alicante’s main train station (RENFE Estacion de Madrid) is located on the Avenida Salamanca and connects to various cities in Spain including Valencia which is less than 2 hours away, Madrid with four hours and Barcelona with 5 hours. This mode can also be used to get to a number of coastal resorts like Benidorm and Denia.

Travel by Boat – This is another form of transport in Alicante with ferries being used most. They travel to Oran city in Algeria and ticket offices can be found at the Puerto Maritimo.

Travel by Taxi – This is one of the most common mode of transport in Alicante city with numerous taxi ranks situated at the city centre and at the airport. They can easily be reached by phone for advance booking or by simply stopping and boarding them at the city streets.
